“We have an obligation and a responsibility to invest in our students and our schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire, and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible.”

                                                                                                             – President Barack Obama

Welcome to the President Barack Obama Community School, your child’s home away from home, also known as the home of the B.E.A.R.S.! It is with great pride and honor that I as the “Learning Leader” alongside of my wonderful Assistant Principal, Mrs. Paulette Bailey, get to spend every productive day of the school year working with such a dynamic group of students, supportive parents/community, and a dedicated staff from grades PK through 8. Together, we strive to achieve the goals of supporting the individualized needs of every child in any and every way possible through a variety of academic and social/emotional support systems. As we embark on a new school year as a Community School, the focal points consist of the following areas: Strong Instruction, Robust Engagement, Continuous Academic Improvement, Attendance Improvement, Parent Engagement and Family Services, After-school Enrichment, Community Development, Youth Development, and Health & Social Services. The President Barack Obama School community is ecstatic about the grand opening of our new additions to the school building for the 2019-2020 school year which includes: a Parent Resource/Conference Center, Food & Clothing Pantry, Tranquility Room, & a School Store which is directly connected to our school-wide Positive Behavior initiative! We invite you to visit anytime you are available during the school hours of 8am to 3pm and our School Community Coordinator will be available to assist you. Please remember, the President Barack Obama Community School belongs to you, the community; your participation and partnership is needed as well as truly appreciated!

As we continue to maintain high academic standards for every child, the hard working educators who work in the school are encouraged and required to research and remain abreast of best instructional practices for all content areas and departments. This also involves social/emotional support services including restorative circles and in-house mentoring in order to effectively develop the whole child by attending professional development opportunities and working closely with administration/professional consultants/specialists. Therefore, we also encourage you to maintain open, ongoing communication with your child’s teachers on a daily/weekly basis in order to learn along with your child, attend all parent meetings and content area parent nights, visit classrooms during Sneak-A-Peek monthly activities, and let us know how we can help through our parent/student  surveys because your voice matters! Technology plays a crucial role in the education of your child throughout all grade levels and especially in the state tested grades including 3rd through 8th. The earlier the exposure to technology (we begin in PK), the better your child will perform on all classroom assignments, tasks, projects, and class / state assessments. Please make every effort to practice all skills with your child at home while he/she completes his/her homework daily and go online to the teacher’s Goggle Classroom assignments/emails/Class Dojo/ and the district Parent Portal in order to stay up to date with how your child is progressing. When available, we also stress the importance of making an appointment to meet with your child’s teachers to find out what support they are requesting from you as the parent/guardian. All important dates are posted monthly on the district website and shared via the Blackboard Connect phone system.

Please enjoy perusing our school website on a monthly basis in order to keep engaged and informed of all significant school information/activities. We look forward to your ongoing collaboration in “spreading the love” throughout the entire school community that we have for all students/families and together, we will continue to strive for what our school motto states, “Success and Nothing Less!”  Thank you for your cooperation and please do not hesitate to reach out to me at sjones@jcboe.org anytime!
